The EU F-Gas Regulation is gradually tightening the requirements for refrigerants. Key deadlines will take effect as early as 2027. Anyone planning, modernizing, or seeking to operate existing systems safely in the long term must act early. We can help you set the right course for sustainable refrigerants.
Starting in 2027, the total permitted amount of HFCs in the EU will drop to 12.3% of the 2015 baseline. At the same time, stricter GWP limits will apply to new systems for the first time: For self-contained air conditioning systems and heat pumps up to 50 kW, as well as for air-to-water split systems, only a GWP below 150 will be permitted—this means the commonly used R-32 (GWP 675) will no longer be available for sale for new systems.
Important: This applies only to the placing on the market of new equipment, not to the operation of existing systems. For you, this means: When making new purchases, consider the GWP limits from the outset; for existing systems, keep an eye on the maintenance regulations (as of 2026, only virgin refrigerants with a GWP below 2,500 will be permitted).

Starting in 2030, the permitted amount of HFCs will decrease further to 5.2% of the 2015 baseline. Refrigerants with a high GWP are disproportionately affected by this. In addition, a levy of €3 per metric ton of CO₂ equivalent will be applied to each allocated quota—for a high-GWP refrigerant such as R-404A (GWP approx. 3,920), this will have a significantly greater impact than for low-GWP alternatives.
For you, this means: Anyone still using high-GWP refrigerants today should expect noticeable shortages and rising costs in the medium term. Switching in a timely manner protects against supply shortages and foreseeable price increases.

Existing systems may continue to be operated, maintained, and recharged—there is no general requirement to decommission them. However, stricter maintenance requirements will apply to refrigeration systems starting in 2032: Only virgin refrigerants with a GWP below 750 will be permitted.
What remains legally permissible must also be available on the market—but for high-GWP refrigerants, this is becoming increasingly uncertain due to phase-down requirements and declining quotas. If a system fails or loses refrigerant due to a leak, replenishment can be difficult to obtain. The result: rising costs and potential downtime.
