Girl power in the tradesMechatronics engineer at aeria Kältetechnik GmbH talks about her consistently positive experiences

Inspired by "Girls' Day", Kira explains in an interview why she decided to take up a typical "male profession" at
and how she now experiences her everyday working life.

Who are you?
Hi, I'm Kira, 24 years old and I work at aeria Kältetechnik GmbH.

What were your reasons for going into the skilled trades? What interested you about the profession of mechatronics technician for refrigeration technology?
I was inspired by the "Girls' Day". As a schoolgirl, you can get a taste of typical male professions for a day. At the time, I wanted to become an electronics technician. But I realized that this field wasn't for me. But what I learned from it was that I definitely wanted to learn a trade. I found out about refrigeration technology through the employment agency. I did two internships and quickly realized that I really liked the varied work in customer service.

Did you have any concerns before deciding on this line of work?
I didn't really have any concerns. I had already got to know most of my colleagues through my internship at the company. They accepted me very well. I was only a little scared of vocational school as one of the few girls. But even there I quickly realized that nobody there had any problems or prejudices.

What do you like best about being a "mechatronics technician for refrigeration technology"?
I mainly work in customer service because I really like this area. I am responsible for the maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting of air conditioning systems

What challenges does the job entail, especially for women?
The only challenge I sometimes notice is lifting heavy outdoor appliances. But my colleagues help me with this. There have been no prejudices so far. Some customers are initially surprised to welcome a woman as a tradesman. But now that most of them know me, they are happy to see me.

What is everyday life like? Are there any differences to male colleagues?
I am treated in the same way as my male colleagues and also have the same tasks

Do you have any tips for women who are interested in the skilled trades?
Every woman who is considering entering the skilled trades should simply do an internship at the beginning. You'll find out relatively quickly whether you like the job or not. In the right company, colleagues don't care whether they work with a woman or a man in the team.

Thank you Kira!
